Join us on a unique 350-year journey from the Netherlands to South Africa and onward to England, following the remarkable route of the humble heerenboontjie, from the Sandveld in the 1600s (tasted by Willem Adriaan van der Stel) to the Castle of Good Hope, and even to the dinner table of Buckingham Palace.
Soprano Marina Erasmus and pianist Roelof Temmingh mirror that voyage in sound, celebrating the birth, development, and stylistic influences of Afrikaans art song.
The programme features gems by S. le Roux Marais, Arnold van Wyk, Johann Franz (“Hans”) Endler, Rosa Nepgen and others — many closely connected to the halls of the Konservatorium, including a fitting tribute to Endler in the Endler Hall.
Highlights include Winternag (the first Afrikaans art song), beloved miniatures and song cycles, as well as new work by Roelof Temmingh (Jnr), all presented as a vivid celebration of Afrikaans poetry and song.
